Buffet Britches & Bees

  • by

Last minute push to CO; painting, and trimming is how we spent our July 4th weekend literally every day from sun up to sun down. Maybe it’s the paint fumes, but despite our exhausted bodies, depleted budget, and the gruesome humidity our good spirits are still intact. The plumber finished yesterday – we have water for the first time in the Oak since we purchased the property.  Today the electrician finishes, the LP tank is being buried and excavation is being finished, and all the gas appliances are being connected because Thursday is CO inspection!!

So about the britches and bees. First – “buffet britches” is my endearing term for elastic waisted stretch pants – the kind one might wish to wear to a buffet to take advantage of an all-you-can-eat bar. Let’s be real, buffet britches are nothing more than pajama bottoms sewn from day-wear fabrics. I ❤ buffet britches which I pronounce boo-fay. I have one pair that have been relegated to painting-only for which I was wearing on Sunday while assisting Keith power washing.  He knocked down a wasp’s nest in the eaves of the screen porch and a furious displaced wasp found it’s way past Keith’s ample buffet shorts, to my long britches and made it’s way to my calf for the first sting, and then up past an old pair of too loose undies, and stung me twice on my twerkle parts. Keith was still power washing until he saw me drop my drawers and the buffet britches in one swift move and began my own fat, fifty-something version of twerking. Confused by my bazaar behavior, Keith jumped off the ladder and came running just as the wasp crawled out of the fabric and flew away.  (And that visual will be with you for a long time to come.) 🙂

The screened porch will be my most favorite room in the house. I had a gas heater installed so that we can enjoy the room even when the weather turns colder. By painting the room the dark color (same as the exterior), it’s as if you’re walking into a darkened 3D movie theatre with the magnificent surroundings of the property being shown nonstop via the screened openings. Then there’s the subtle smells of the lake and the rain forest, the rustling of the creek, and the call of the bullfrogs…

Soon, very soon, we will be living in our small little dream home…it’s been a sacrifice for all involved; the sellers, the workers, the tradesmen, and well – this picture says it all, right? But Keith’s still smiling.

  1. THANK you, for the much needed chuckle! Am commiserating from afar with your devil wasp experience…one tagged my dang wrist while I was walking across the porch. One can only imagine that feeling of OMFG as it went up your pant leg, into the nether regions!! You’re almost there chickie, cocktails and coloring books are in your future. Love, peace and serenity NOW!

    1. Thank goodness we didn’t capture this digitally! Looking forward to seeing y’all and introducing you to your namesakes. 🙂

  2. You are so entertaining! Sorry about your wasp sting! It just made it worse because it was ahhhh…. On your personal parts. Soon you will be able enjoys your hard work and it will BE all WORTH it!

  3. Love the story. Now when will you begin writing a book? Joe and I are seriously considering moving to our creek property on Cowee. Looks like so much to look forward to? Of course not remodeling…

    1. Thanks Theresa – my suggestion; if you’re planning to do any renovations yourself move sooner than later. We’re REALLY getting too old for this stuff! Ha!

  4. Just how many “YEARS” has it been since I said you need to write a book in all of your “spare” time???!!!
Glad things are coming together for you two!
    Love and Miss you!

    1. Hey Girlie! Miss you, TOO! I hope coastal life for y’all is still going well. Whenever you two take a notion to escape to the mountains we have a place for you to stay! ~ Keith keeps telling me to write as well – as soon as my soul is settled I may just take a crack at it.
