Saturday morning I went there…I had a full-on hissy fit. The gist of it all – unfulfilled expectations from Friday. Rather than hashing out the boring details I will say most issues have been smoothed over but there’s no question I am emotionally and financially DONE with our restoration! The craftsmen have overstayed their welcome and we have overspent our budget two times over.
When I feel slighted I get pissy and cuss like a sailor’s whore. If I believed in purgatory, then Saturday morning would have surely bought me a few centuries of cleaning up before I was eligible to pass the pearly gates…thankfully I’m not Catholic or any other denomination at the moment. At any rate, as much as I really like the contractors, I’m ready for them to be the hell out of here. Their feelings are mutual. It’s just “that time” in the project.
Monday, the fellas made good on their promises of last week – they stepped up their game. Monday we also had another appraisal and to be honest, that was the driving factor of my melt down Saturday morning. So many things I expected to be done by the appraisal (things the contractors promised would be completed) weren’t close to being finished. That, and I am sure I was a bit emotional about my last day of business for Shucks Pearls the previous day.
I told the contractors that if I had to do it over again I would never consent to paying craftsmen by the hour, but would only pay by the job. And Andrew told me that I would never find a contractor willing to take on a restoration by the job. And I suspect he’s right. There’s too many unknowns. The quality of workmanship has been above average, and our contractors have a great reputation and rapport with many local tradesmen and licensed craftsmen. So, in essence their value is greater than the labor charged. Still…we’re over it.
Rather than get my expectation “drawers” in a twist again, I’m just going to say we hope to be in the Oak by Keith’s birthday which is July 6th and almost a YEAR since we first laid eyes on the property. There is no doubt we could have built a new home quicker and cheaper, but that was never the point.
Sheet rock folks were in yesterday to mud and tiling is in the works. Here are some pictures of ongoing projects. Oh – you thought I had pictures of my hissy fit? Sorry to disappoint. lol
Note – the wall color in the guest bath/laundry is not purple but rather the standard blue board. And there is a fun reason for the black and white tile. I’m anxious to pull everything together to show off this quirky, multipurpose room.
You will never cease to amaze us! Absolutely stunning! Your dedication and eye for design are second to none. Would love to see it sometime…but I guess this is a dream.
Hugs
Gill & Aidan
If y’all take a notion to “jump the pond”, we will welcome you with open arms! Any more cruises in the works? Thank you for your complements – sure do miss you both!
Rather disappointed not to see photos of the “hissy fit.” Surprised I didn’t hear anything over this way, but I’ve been pretty busy as of late.
