Progress (more ways than one)

  • by

I’m writing offline from the back deck of the Acorn this morning. I generally write my blogs while listening to streaming spa radio (because I’m transcendental like that). But since our power is cut, this is my soundtrack on this particular day.

Our power is cut because Duke Energy contractors are here preparing a right of way for the new power lines to be installed. FINALLY! We’ve been waiting over a month for this event. Getting new wattage into the property changes everything. Within a week electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and propane can all be “online” and that means we can be issued a CO – because, our new custom cabinets are being installed on Monday!

Keith and I have the entire interior primed and ready for paint. I was able to get the bulk of that done yesterday with the help of my friend, Farrah. She’s a tiny little thing but can get some serious work done! She also happens to be the wife of one of our contractors, which goes to show that our contractors are as much our friends as building professionals.

Keith had already primed the ceilings, which, please indulge me while I brag on my husband; I only painted two small ceilings yesterday and my neck was killing me. Keith’s stamina for a 59yo is amazing. He laments that he can’t work as long as he once could and he reminisces about working nonstop on physical projects from sunup to sundown (and he truly did), but now those days are a bit shorter. However, not by much. He can still hold his own with fellas half his age.

So, this weekend our intentions are to have the interior walls and ceilings completed with finish paint. And by “we”, know that I mean mostly Keith in all instances. The task should go fairly quickly since we’re not dealing with trim at present. We will be trimming out windows, doors, ceilings and floors between floor refinishing that is contracted out. And when we can’t trim we will be finishing the exterior painting. Finish work is our wheel house and at this point in the project and budget, hiring it out isn’t an option. Thankfully, we genuinely love the work and working together.

Back to the work happening today. I’m dreading seeing the clearing that must happen to run in new cables. Two huge pines on the edge of the drive are marked for removal. The contractor will fell the trees, but we’re in charge of any clean up and removal. I will take pictures for another post. In the meantime, this is our granddaughter fishing for the first time on King Pond. This is also our son’s first time back on the property since January. Our oldest daughter is in the background. She and her husband graciously gave up their free time to help us on Memorial Day weekend. Yonderways is a place for reconciling especially for the joy of a child.
