Half Dozen

New chicks for Yonderways (video). Presently they’re living inside for socialization and to protect them against predators. Admittedly, we’re clueless about raising chickens, and that’s a bit sad for folks rounding the bend to their 60’s. But considering we were raised on the likes of Tang, Spam, instant mashed potatoes, instant milk (the WORST), Captain Crunch, Nestle’s Quik, pink wieners, and a myriad of convenient frozen foods (all served up in a thick fog of second hand smoke), it’s a wonder we have any sensibilities about our food sources or health. Just goes to show, you CAN teach old dogs new tricks. We’re hoping to raise the hens for the eggs, but as an acquaintance lamented, “Yep, I spend $20 a month on chicken feed and get about $8 worth of eggs.” And in our case, we spent $100 on chicks and supplies before the coop is built…which means we could have already purchased 33 dozen organic, local eggs. Vanities….
