Inspections – Introspections

Inspections – Introspections

County inspections of framing (and foundation), electrical, plumbing, HVAC are scheduled today. Once we get the thumbs up we’ll be able to move forward with all the work needed to finish the house to occupancy; sheetrock, tiling, insulation, cabinets, finished plumbing, etc. We’ve been waiting for this day for WEEKS!

The picture is of the fellas installing the front door. The roofing was finished last week, and the siding will be finished in the next few days. Today is the first time I’ve been able to really “feel” the realization of living in the Oak Cottage. Even though we’ve had the privilege to live in much grander homes over the years, including a stunning adobe style 6000sf hacienda in Puebla, Mexico. I feel extremely privileged and proud to call this modest 1560sf cottage and the surrounding land our forever home.

I just got off the phone with my friend and realtor, Nancy Witek. I shared that Keith and I are overwhelmed by the projects that will no doubt take us years to complete, but that we don’t regret one second our decision to take on this property because already it has gifted us so much joy. Nancy replied, “I’ll never forget the 2nd or third time we came out to view the property and you looked at Keith and asked, ‘Are we crazy to take on this project? We can’t do what we once could’…and Keith just smiled and that was that.”

We were terribly smitten…we knew in our bones we were to live here. Never in our 20 prior moves had we ever felt “home”. To identify so strongly with a piece of property needing so much attention sounds fool hardy, especially for two folks traveling at warp speed into their sixties. But at the risk of sounding woo-woo I am not ashamed to admit on my walks about the property I thank the former proprietors and the trees and the waters for allowing us stewardship at this time…we are most grateful for this privilege. I am also grateful for the current mortgage holders, the sellers, for their understanding and patience. This has truly been a journey for all involved.
